Building Biology Evaluation Guidelines SBM-2015

In 1992, Wolfgang Maes in collaboration with the Institute of Building Biology + Sustainability Neubeuern, including many medical doctors, scientists, and engineers, established the first EMF guidelines specifically for sleeping areas. In addition to a broad spectrum of electromagnetic fields (A) such as RF radiation, ELF electric and magnetic fields, static electric and magnetic fields, as well as radioactivity, these guidelines also cover chemical (B) and biological (C) agents. The latest edition of the Building Biology Testing Conditions also includes recommendations on lighting and flicker. The Building Biology Evaluation Guidelines (SBM-2015) are based on empirical observations, consider scientific findings, follow the precautionary principle, and use nature as the ultimate guide.

Exposure levels are divided into 4 action levels:

No Anomaly = No action required.

Exposure levels below this no-anomaly guideline value reflect natural conditions or typical and nearly inevitable background levels of our modern living environments.

Slight Anomaly = Take preventative action.

Exposure levels in this range are slightly elevated and especially those who are environmentally sensitive and/or chronically ill are advised to take preventative action.
